Strongbox Magazine
I just came across this online magazine Strongbox Magazine it's quite inspirational and interesting. The story on Kids the graffiti artist who passed away recently made me quite emotional. I didn't know him but I have seen his tags around Pittsburgh.
I've always been a huge fan of graffiti and the people who make it. When I was younger those are the only people I related to the ones who took risks and seriously wanted to change the world. I remember going under this abandoned bridge with my friend when I was 16 as he tagged the most beautiful poem and flower.

Albino Animals is Open!
Check out my new Etsy store I'll be adding a ton of eco friendly handmade goods over the next few weeks each line is based on an animal. The Fall 2010 lines will include an albino deer, fruit bat and luna moth line. All the clothes and jewelry are based on a color palette that mirrors those animals. I'll be donating 10% of everything I sell to ALS research in honor of my uncle Tim.

Welcome to the Rileys
This movie looks amazing the trailer made me cry. I watched some interview's with Kristen Stewart about preparing for the part and it's interesting to hear another girl be so protective of people. Interview

DAN’S MISSION STATEMENT
Mission Statement for Safari as a Way of Life
"To explore the unknown and the familiar, distant and near and to record in detail with the eyes of a child, any beauty, (of the flesh or otherwise) horror, irony, traces of utopia or Hell. Select your team with care, but when in doubt, take on some new crew and give them a chance. But avoid at all costs fluctuations of sincerity with your best people."

Self Love (the PG kind)
I'm starting to finally realize that one of the best things a person can do for themself is to engage in compassion and self love. For way too many years I wasted time comparing myself to others and engaging in very negative self defeating thought patterns. The interesting thing was I would give others extreme leeway to treat me poorly. I would always give countless excuses for their inexcusable behavior and waste time trying to understand their viewpoint. I think if my self esteem had been higher at the time clarity would show there is NO excuse to treat any human being with disregard and faulty compassion.
I truly believe everyone is deserving of attention, appreciation and love. Why is this so lacking in our culture? Seems to me that once the basic needs are met love, comfort and security that is when magic can happen.

Buses in the Spring
I can still see white tiles - black grout
bottle of soda tucked inside an arm.
The many heads, eyes and legs
pushing, pulling luggage to doors.
Impatient huffing cold weights and hands.
"I have nothing left to say to you."
There is always a mind's eye.
A feeling or memory can haunt
and brittle love.
Tarnished scorn tic tac toe
a belly of black hissing words
can claim anything innocent...
choke hold of misunderstandings.
I haven't understood
the isolation or self hate
that seemed to pile in groves
beside my legs.
There was never a child
just an open eye waiting

Allen Ginsberg and Howl
Joined a poetry club today at the library should be an interesting way to get back into writing poems. James Franco is playing Allen Ginsberg, I hope the film lives up to the poetry of Allen Ginsberg. Howl changed my life in a way. Howl trailer

MGMT - touring
MGMT is going to be playing in Philly at the Mann Center soon wish I didn't have anxiety about big crowds (sorta recent thing) would definitely go. Maybe I'll do some EFT and get over that fear...hmm. On a separate note I also wish more touring bands would come to Pittsburgh.

ALS 2011 Fundraiser
If you're an artist of any kind please email me if you'd like to donate a piece of art for the 2011 ALS fundraiser. I won't be collecting the art for a bit but I'd like to get a clear list of the donations and projections etc. I'd like to raise $25,000 for ALS research and families over the course of the next year preferably for local Pittsburgh sufferers. Quite a lofty goal I know, but I think it's possible. The more I converse with people the more I realize how common ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease) is and it breaks my heart.

Love
I've been thinking a lot about love lately and what it means to be open in this world without making yourself a constant victim. I spoke to an elderly couple yesterday as I was getting my car fixed and they had been married for 55 years! I asked them how they stayed together for so long and the woman said "Give and take." I laughed and told her I really wanted to get married but at the rate I was going that wasn't exactly going to happen. She reassured me that it would at some point and not to rush it.
There was something so genuine and enchanting about them. They seemed to be so connected with each other that one tiny facial expression given to the other could tell a story. There is so much beauty in this world that I have been overlooking. I'm pretty thankful I can see it at least for now. I do think people need to be appreciated more and loved more but maybe that's a by product of my own wish and I'm projecting it.

Found poem
I recently found a poem I wrote when I was 18 reading it I see how unhappy and confused I used to be. When I was about 15 or so I discovered a poem by Emily Dickinson on bee's. I'll never forget the jolt of awareness that brought me. I instantly started researching who she was and discovered I truly related to her sense of isolation but also wonder at the world. I get quite overwhelmed with emotion daily to be honest and it's taken me years to figure out how to not be drained by this fast paced world we live in.
After I discovered Emily I went on to read Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, and Jane Kenyon. I asked my dad if I could have his old desk in the basement along with his typewriter. So I would spent hours writing in our basement which quite worried my mother "What are you doing down there..why don't you go out?"
I did burn or throw away all of the poetry I had written from the time I was 15 - 18 and it was quite a lot of poems. My friend Jim (a poet himself who introduced me to The Beat Poets) told me I would regret it but I don't. Those writings were filled with pain, trauma, loneliness, the sense of feeling rejected and unlovable so why keep them?

+ almost 3 years
"For me the world is weird because it is stupendous, awesome, mysterious, unfathomable; my interest has been to convince you that you must assume responsibility for being here, in this marvelous desert world, in this marvelous time. I wanted to convince you that you must learn to make every act count, since you are going to be here for only a short while; in fact too short for witnessing all the marvels of it." - Don Juan
Journey to Ixtlan, Carlos Castaneda
And off we go to a new surrounding, a new way of life.

Recycled Plastic Necklaces
I'm currently working on these plastic necklaces from recycled materials. It's for the upcoming Pillow Project event can't wait! The necklaces are made from laundry detergent bottles and these cellophane sheets my boss gave me awhile back. I'll be selling the necklaces at the event. My new friend Aaron informed me they mentioned these necklaces in the Post Gazette review !

The 4th of July in a Cemetery
Last night was quite amazing went to my sister's house for a barbecue and we ended up watching the fireworks from a cemetery. I really felt a sense of peace sitting next to my friends on a little smurf blanket. It made me realize how far I've come this year. I no longer worry about every little thing and I'm finding the world a magical place again.
It was funny watching the two cops school people at the cemetery though. There was an older cop and a very hot younger woman cop who explained "No extra fireworks in the cemetery will be tolerated!! Under any circumstances." When some kids started lighting fireworks the cop screamed "Hey GENIUSES you better put that out...or else."
(I quietly yelled taser, taser..jk)

ALS Fundraiser
I decided I'm going to organize a fundraiser here in Pittsburgh in honor of my uncle Tim who passed away from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) recently. I want to do something to not only raise money for ALS research but possibly help the people who suffer from the disease and can't afford in-house care. ALS is a very difficult and debilitating disease... I really hope they can find a cure soon info.
I'm thinking a concert would be an interesting way to raise funds along with donated art. If you have any ideas or can help please contact me at Speaking4lines@gmail.com.
Thanks :)

A Cup of Tea with Death
I've been thinking a lot about the many things I learned from experiencing what it is to lose someone you love. I never understood how difficult it is to let go of a person you care about and it got me thinking about what I want out of life.
I truly want to inspire other people, but also let them feel loved and appreciated by me everyday. I don't think this is an easy task by any means. I have bad days just like anyone else where I feel irritable and negative. But to me negativity seems like the easy choice and life is way too precious to allow that in daily. I want to experience joy and positivity even if it takes work to get there. Which in my experience it does you almost have to wade through all the humiliation and trauma you've experienced and then after all that work is the light and brevity of living.
My uncle Tim was a beautiful soul who was extremely vulnerable to life's hardships. He wanted to do sooo many things he never got a chance to do. He loved Rock and Roll ,The Beatles and The Who preferably... newer bands like Bright Eyes. He was a master woodworker and a great listener. Tim was also hilarious his humor was quite brilliant it was self deprecating but also extremely inspiring. I will miss him everyday of my life and take the things he taught me over the course of knowing him and live in his honor.
I'm also thinking about doing an ALS fundraiser in his honor.

Emily Dickinson Art Box
Here is the start of the Emily Dickinson art box I'll be burying in Frick Park for someone to find soon. I'll be adding much more to the box in the coming days including handmade flower seed packets to plant a garden and a miniature white dress. Everything in the box is based on a phrase or poem by Emily. I love the idea of someone finding this and treasuring it, but of course you never know what will happen to it once I leave it in the park.
